Well, I was very lucky. My mom still had baby furniture in very good condition, so I used her bassinet (I slept in it as a baby!), her crib, and her dresser/changing table. I knew a baby shower was being planned, so I figured I’d be getting all the basics, and then some. So I decided it would be better to wait for that rather than spend my money on things I may already be getting as gifts. The only things I bought myself before the shower and baby, were things I knew I’d be picky about, like the diaper bag and baby book. I bought those myself, and also a thick blanket I saw that I really liked. I also bought the coming home outfit for my baby. I did end up receiving literally everything on my baby registry, which included a stroller/car seat/carrier combo, and high chair. I don’t think it’s too early to be buying stuff, especially if you see something you really like. I just barely made it, for some reason my shower was not even a month before I was due, and I did end up having my baby early, the week after my shower. So keep in mind you should have basic essentials that you will need should the baby come unexpectedly. Good luck, and have fun shopping!

i started getting stuff (all gifts) around 5-6mos but to keep my anxiousness level down i didnt set it up until about 1month before his due date. he came 2wks after tho. if you start setting it all up now you will constantly look at it and wish they were there already. for your sake… wait til the end! :)

As soon as someone finds out they usually buy something little, but once they are apast the 3 month risk of miscarriages they start buying more, but the most stuff prob around month 7- also the baby shower between 6-8 months sometimes even 9 months. You should be able to start buying stuff now, esp if the baby is at no risk and your apast the 3 month stage. Have fun!

I did my registry at 20 weeks, I used it as a check list for everything I needed from bottles up to the mattress and bed. I check the list about once a week to see what I still need and started buying diapers at 20 weeks I bought all sensitive skin baby products just incase. friends and family started asking me where I was registered at when I was about 25 weeks and I had my shower on the first of april so I have everything I need and I’m 32 weeks you may be surprised at what some people will buy you, I had family members buy my swing, bassinette, pack n play, bouncy seat carseat/stroller, and I wasn’t expecting that at all.

I started buying stuff for the baby when we were about 6 months into it. I did not buy a lot because we never found out what we were having and I had a very large baby shower.
We bought a swing. I already had a crib from my nephew and a few baby carries/ carseats.
You start getting stuff when you are ready to get it. I would buy maybe a few bags of small diapers and buy the rest in larger sizes because they grow so fast.

After you have completed your first trimester, because most pregnancys go to term after that. I say buy away.

  7. Tab says:

Diapers are expensive you should start buying those now. Size does not matter, stock up now.

We started getting the large tiems out of the way when I was about 5 to 6 months pregnant. I wouldn’t buy too many 0-3 months and newborn clothes, the baby will grow out of them so quickly. I have a big baby, he is 5 months old and has to wear 6-9 and 12 month clothes. I only had one pack of newborn diapers, the hospital gave me a pack als and by the time we went through them he was in the next size. If you see something you like, get it, you will use it. Remember if you are having a baby shower people will buy you things, but get what you want and have fun shopping.

usually people wait 3 months just because chances of misscarriage go down but if your having a baby shower i would wait till after that you’ll probably get lots of stuff from there but i couldn’t wait i went and bought an outfit right away just one lol

I started buying baby clothes before I got pregnant. We were trying to have a baby so when I found things on sale I bought it and placed it in my hope chest. As for furniture we bought a dresser when I was about 10 weeks along because when we found out I was pregnant my family went overboard and started sending boxes and boxes of clothes for me and the baby.
** Babys never wear out their clothes before they out grow them so to save money check out second hand stores. (I found 3 Christian Dior suits for $25 )

my daughter is 14 weeks pregnant, and we’ve already bought some outfits on clearance…we’ve been saving diaper coupons and plan to start buying diapers soon so we’re not so overwhelmed when the baby comes…we got a free crib several weeks ago, otherwise i would’ve waited to get a crib…people are already buying stuff off her baby registry at target…it’s not too early now…that way you’re not so overburdened at once…best wishes!!

I don’t start buying baby thing until 24 weeks or so. My reasoning is if the baby is born at that time they have a higher chance of surviving. It might seem morbid but I have had a lot of losses.
That being said buy things when you feel comfortable. I think it would be easier money-wise if you are buying things here and there through your pregnancy.
Like a previous poster said, someone will throw you a shower too so don’t buy too much now and definately don’t buy too many newborn clothes or diapers. They are only in them for about two seconds.:)
Good luck with your new daughter and have fun shopping!

We actually didn’t buy our son’s furniture until he was about 6 months old. We knew we wanted to get something that would grow with him but we also wanted something that was going to fit his personality! We had him in our outer bedroom in a bassinet until then and I cleared out part of my dresser for his clothes. I’m glad we made the decision we did. The furniture we had originally picked out before he was born definitely does not match his personality!
As for clothes, I bought just a few outfits that I really liked as soon as I found out we were expecting a boy. Most of his clothes were either hand-me-downs or from friends and family and they started arriving as soon as we told everyone we were expecting a boy. Trust me, you’ll get a ton of smaller sizes! Diapers, I got several boxes at our baby shower but had one small package of new born (your hospital will typically send you home with a pack as well; most babies don’t stay in that size too long!) and one large box of each size after that (just in case).
Best advice I can give you is to concentrate on the basics more than all the stuff you think you might need. Bottles, diapers, spit clothes (those are your friend!), sleep and play outfits (they look rather like footed pj’s but in a t-shirty material), baby wipes and diapers are what you’ll really use the most the first few months.
    Good luck and congratulations!

start looking for sales now. trust me, you’ll save SO MUCH MONEY by buying in bulk when sales come around. its what my sister did, and she saved about 3,000 dollars when it came down to it

After we found out the gender, so just a few weeks farther along than you. I think around 21 weeks.

  16. melissa g says:

I stared after the three month period. Go wild if you want to buy something. Just remember your mom will probably throw a baby shower. And also don’t buy to many small cloths. The baby grows so fast that buying different sizes is the smart thing to do. So if you see an outfit that you love but they only have a six month left, go for it. the baby will fit into it before you blink. Good luck with your new baby girl.

We started picking up little things really early – diapers, blankets, bath items, a few small things for the nursery. Once we found out it was a girl, we started getting clothes and other more gender-specific items. We bought the furniture and decorated the nursery at about 25 weeks or so. I was really excited, and we had just moved into a new house so I could finally unpack all the baby stuff and play with it. I do wish I’d waited a little longer, because now I’m bored out of my mind!
At the beginning of my pregnancy, we decided to spend a set amount of money per month on baby stuff. That way it wouldn’t all come down on us at once, and we could budget for it. Now we are pretty much ready for the baby, and still have a lot of things on our registry that our friends/family can buy for the shower we’re having after she’s born. If you think your family might buy you some of the bigger items, wait until after your shower to really go nuts buying things. If people want to spend money on you, I say let them!
ETA: The earlier you start shopping, the more money you can save by shopping around and waiting for sales. I’ve saved hundreds of dollars on our baby stuff by shopping sales, thrift stores, and getting hand-me-downs.

It’s probably okay to start buying things now. I am a planner and an organizer and I had all of my stuff bought and the nursery decorated very early.
You have to consider that the main things you will need (crib, stroller, car seat, etc.) are also the most expensive. The other thing to consider is if you are having a shower…Some of these things MAY be bought for you. At the very least start saving up in case you don’t get any of the big ticket items at any shower you may have, then you’re not spending thousands of dollars you had not planned on right before the baby comes.
We were of the last in our family (being the youngest) to have kids so we also got tons of hand-me downs. I still went out and bought some outfits and different things I wanted. They are only little once and it goes by so fast. Getting a few special things won’t hurt. But, keep your receipts (just in case it turns out to be a boy!!
